Upholding the esteem of being the antecedent, the Department of Mining Engineering, IIT Kharagpur has always believed in the flow of practical knowledge with innovation as inspiration, which has rejuvenated the ancestral engineering ideals into the modern facts.

With this vision as the developments in the Mining and Geology industries, the Department of Mining engineering initiated GREATSTEP in 2008 to create a common platform for young talents. The last eight editions were filled with mind churning challenges, informative guest lectures and workshops aimed at the expansion of thoughts into the unexplored realms of the field. GREATSTEP 2016 is all set with new and exalted levels of enthusiasm to march ahead as the flag bearer to its legacy in all respects. As a continuation of past years this year also we are bringing the new edition of GREATSTEP from September 30th to 2nd October 2016.

• Mineo Case Study
• The dangerous mining fields, the underground excavations; the unimaginable situations for miners we can have something to go out there called ROBOTS. As the name itself says, geobotics is the mock tail of mines with the intelligence of robotics technology and your creativity. To develop state of the art sensing, control, and planning systems that will enable the hottest buzz of mining activity the mine automation - Here is a chance to induce a sliver of your intelligence in drab bots. We Hail the budding innovators and engineers to solve the Mining Problems with remote-controlled or autonomous bots. 
• Petro Case Study
•  Case Study presents an opportunity to investigate into a current buzz in the petroleum Industry. Here is a chance to develop your insight in petroleum and learn the rudiments of it. It aims to gauge your analyzing and presentation skills to the fullest.

  • Think a innovative idea which can be implemented in mining field .Here you have to present your innovative idea it may be paper or model presentation during event.The idea must have following feature :-

• Enviro CaseStudy 
• Enviro case study provides you an excellent opportunity to compete with the brightest minds from various colleges of India and test your techno-environmental skills and knowledge in the field of environmental science and technology. Through case study ,this event will be a great learning and networking opportunity for you and it will increase your knowledge in the field of environmental studies.

• Survekshan 
• Survey,Map,Execute….Few important stands of a Engineer…This event provides an insight into planning part of an engineer and hones the planning skill of participants. The event will challenge the students to apply classroom knowledge of surveying in order to solve a real problem. The event will simulate the surveying problems in real conditions.

• As intriguing as the name suggests, GREAT STEP presents you a unique opportunity to get yourself a hands-on experience in making some of the design problems faced currently by the mining and petroleum industries.IDP will be requiring the participants to muster all their knowhow to come up with one hell of an idea and convert it into a design in a very short span which will be a panacea for the burning problem of industry today.So get ready for a challenging surprise problem and show everybody how fast and creative you are. 

• MineIndite
• Your erudition is incomplete if you don’t have a chance to share it among your inquisitive fraternity. The paper presentation session is especially meant for that purpose. In order to provide an avenue for young minds and to inspire them for higher achievements this paper presentation is only for students. We would only be more than eager to welcome you and your brilliant ideas.

• T-Shirts give a face to any fest. We love tees because they have so many rooms for creativity in terms of design. They are a vital element of the fest and help them to reach out to a large number of people When was the last time we you walked down the street and people start checking out your attire? It doesn’t have to be something branded, a creative and catchy t-shirt will do.
  GREAT STEP 2016, invites the cool designers out there to let your mind create your magnum opus on the theme GREAT STEP.

• Today photography has become a global cacophony of freeze-frames. Photography is a wonderful time full of creativity and discovery. We love to present your creative & perceptive side by presenting these pictures. Through an online event on social media, the winning picture will be displayed during GREAT STEP’s inauguration.

• Workshop
• Great step will be organizing a workshop which will be a short educational program designed to teach participants practical skills, techniques, or ideas which you can use in your work sphere. The workshop will be conducted by people who have real experience in the subject under discussion. Keep visiting for latest updates.

• Great Step has always been graced by eminent personalities from all over the world. IIT Kharagpur Great Step 2016 accommodation

All the participants will be provided some dormitory sort of arrangements. Special accommodation for girls will be provided with 24 hour authorized security.
Great Step 2016 accommodation Accommodation will be provided from 9:00 hrs of (30th Sept., 2016) to 9:00 hrs of (2th October, 2016). Kindly try to be with this scheme. However, if you have any ineluctable problem, don't hesitate to contact the team members and you will definitely be taken care of.
